Sligo sees record low as temperatures dip to -16C

Met Éireann says a new record low temperature for December was set overnight in Sligo, where the air temperature reached -16C, with the second big freeze of winter now expected to last until Christmas Day.

Motorists are being warned to take extreme care when driving as freezing temperatures overnight have again left many roads around the country in a dangerous condition.

Forecasters say the midlands and northwest of the country will face temperatures of -7C or -8C all day today.

There was little further snowfall overnight, but compacted snow and ice remains widespread.

AA Roadwatch has warnings in place for roads in Ulster, Munster, Connacht and parts of Leinster.

Sean Hogan from the Severe Weather Co-ordination Service said every effort was being made to grit roads and keep transport systems moving.

"The main priority routes in urban areas are by and large functioning again," he said.

Met Éireann is warning of a possibility of heavy snow in the south and southeast tomorrow, with a thaw expected on Christmas Day.
