New identity guidelines to tackle 'sham' marriages

New guidelines have been issued to marriage registrars in a bid to tackle suspected sham marriages between eastern European women and non-EU nationals.

The Irish Times reports the Government guidelines include new identification requirements for all people getting married and restrictions on the use of interpreters.

The move follows lobbying by other EU countries, who have raised concerns following sham marriages conducted to bypass Irish immigration laws.
