A post mortem has revealed that an elderly nursing home patient died of natural causes following a fire at the care facility.

A small blaze broke out at the Lakes Nursing Home in Killaloe in Clare in the early hours of today.

The fire broke out in a first floor room of the Killaloe nursing home shortly before 1am today.

Staff then began moving residents away from the blaze to another part of the facility.

A 95-year-old woman who had been gravely ill died during the move.

However a post mortem on her body has concluded that she died from natural causes.

A 21-year-old man was injured and a garda was treated for smoke inhalation following the fire, which caused minor damage to the facility.
