Man charged with dangerous driving causing death

A charge of dangerous driving causing the death of two teenagers was brought against a man who made an unsuccessful bail application today.

Philip Murphy (aged 40), of 58 Killala Gardens, Cork, was back in Cork District Court, where he was already facing a charge of falsely imprisoning Darren Lenehan at Hollywood Estate, Blarney, Co Cork, on Thursday May 13, contrary to the Non-fatal Offences Against the Person Act.

Today Garda Daniel Culloty charged Murphy with dangerous driving on Friday May 14 on Harbour View Road causing the death of CJ Dolan, 16, and Derry O’Callaghan, 19.

Garda Culloty said the charges were all related to the one case.

Three other charges brought against Murphy yesterday were of drink driving, and having no licence or insurance.

Inspector Michael McGuire said the state was opposed to bail on the dangerous driving causing death even though Murphy was remanded in custody with consent to bail on the false imprisonment charge by the High Court last Monday.

Garda Culloty claimed that Murphy was a heroin user and added, “I believe his release from prison would lead to tensions in the area due to a feud in the area. I would be afraid that if released on bail he would commit further serious offences and would not stand trial.”

Murphy said he knew he was not going to be granted bail in Cork District Court yesterday and said he would have to go back up to the High Court in Dublin to get bail on the fresh charges.Judge O’Leary refused the bail application and remanded Murphy in custody on the dangerous driving causing death charge until the vacation sitting of Cork District Court on August 4.
