Murder probe after post mortem confirms assault led to GAA fan's death
A murder probe was launched today after the death of a 63-year-old man almost a week after he was viciously beaten.
The victim, named locally as Athlone bachelor Martin O’Gorman, was found unconscious by a taxi driver on Academy Street in Navan, Co Meath, at around 12.30am last Monday.
It is believed he sustained head injuries during a serious assault by a group of up to four people.
Mr O’Gorman lost his fight for life yesterday at Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.
A post-mortem examination has been completed and detectives have upgraded their investigation to a murder inquiry.
The victim’s wallet, cash and mobile phone were found on him after the assault, leaving investigators confused about the motive. No one has been arrested over the attack.
Mr O’Gorman, who was known as a Meath GAA supporter, was initially taken to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Drogheda before being transferred to Beaumont.
It is believed he had been socialising in Navan after the Meath v Laois GAA match in Tullamore.
Investigating gardai have appealed for information.
Detectives in Navan are seeking to speak to three or four people, at least two of whom were women, seen around Academy Street between midnight and 1am on the night of the assault.
