Govt withdraws appeal in transgender case
The Government has withdrawn a Supreme Court appeal in the case of transgender woman Lydia Foy.
Dr Foy - who was registered at birth as a male - has fought a 13-year legal battle to be recognised as a woman.
Dr Lydia Foy was born Donal Mark Foy and had two children before his marriage ended and she changed her name by deed poll.
The Government now accepts that the 2008 High Court ruling in Dr Foy's favour that Ireland's birth registration laws are in breach of EU law.
The Government has set up a working group.
But solicitor with the support group FLAC Michael Farrell says it must now overhaul the legislation.
