Investigation continues into death of man in Cork
A man found dead in Cork city earlier has been named locally as Liam McCarthy, a native of London who had been living in Cork for some time.
The 25-year-old's body was discovered in a shed behind a house on St Rita's Avenue in Gurranabraher just after 6.30am this morning. It is believed he had been beaten and stabbed.
A 31-year-old man was arrested and is being detained under section four of the Criminal Justice Act at Gurranabraher Garda station, where he can be held for 24 hours.
It is reported gardaí are investigating whether the death may be related to an attempted robbery.
A Garda spokeswoman said they were investigating all the circumstances.
The scene was sealed off for a forensic examination by members of the Garda Technical Bureau.
Assistant state pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster carried out a preliminary post-mortem examination on the body this morning.
The remains were then removed to Cork University Hospital where a more detailed post-mortem examination was being carried out.
Gardai have appealed for anyone who saw anything unusual in the Grandfather Road or St Rita’s Avenue area between 5am and 7am this morning to get in touch.
