Twins stable after operation

Conjoined twins who were seperated after a 14-hour operation at London's Great Ormond street hospital are said to be in a stable condition this evening.

Hassan and Hussein Benhaffaf, from Cork, are expected to remain in intensive care for a number of days.

Dr Edward Kiely, the Cork-born consultant paediatrician who oversaw the operation, said he is pleased with how it went.

The babies parents, Angie and Azzedine have thanked all those involved in the operation and those who have prayed for the twins.

In a statement today, they said the boys had won the battle of their lives.

The boys were born in December last year and were joined at the chest, but they didn't share any of their major organs.

The hospital said the next few days are critical for the twins who will remain in intensive care.
