Gardaí appoint Chief Super to probe Sargent case

Trevor Sargent has said he doesn't believe Fianna Fáil leaked the information which led to his resignation.

The Evening Herald has reported that he wrote to a senior Garda last week concerning a criminal prosecution being taken against a constituent.

Despite insisting he'd made no contact since the original representation two years ago, Mr Sargent asked a Superintendent to "keep on this case" as he feared for the safety of Dominic McGowan.

The Garda Commissioner Facthna Murphy has confirmed that a Chief Superintendent is being appointed to investigate the leaks, and the information which led former Defence Minister Willie O'Dea to quit last week.

The Green Party TD said he doesn't believe Opposition claims that the letters were leaked by Fianna Fáil in revenge for his party's pressure on Willie O'Dea to resign last week.
