Two major universities will today launch plans for a strategic alliance, the first of its kind in the country.

Two major universities will today launch plans for a strategic alliance, the first of its kind in the country.

The University of Limerick and the National University of Ireland Galway will pool resources to deliver third level education in the mid-west and west.

The two universities have a combined student population of 27,000, along with 3,500 staff.

Last month the Government announced the decision to dissolve the NUI.
