Man charged with IRA membership
A Tyrone man was today brought before the Special Criminal Court and charged with membership of the IRA and the possession of a firearm and ammunition.
David Jordan (aged 38) of Donaghmore, Co Tyrone is accused of being a member of an illegal organisation, namely the IRA, and of the unlawful possession of a semi-automatic pistol and eight rounds of 9mm ammunition at St. Martin’s Row, Belturbet, Co Cavan on January 8, 2010.
Detective Garda Paul Cullen of Ballyconnellgarda station told a special sitting of the three-judge, non-jury court that he arrested Mr Jordan at 9.45am on January 9 for the purposes of bringing him before the court.
Detective Garda Cullen told Mr Liam Mulholland, solicitor representing the DDP, that the man made no reply when cautioned.
Solicitor for Mr Jordan, Mr Michael Finucane, made no objection to the accused being remanded in custody.
Mr Jordan will appear again before the Special Criminal Court on Friday January 15 next, at the Criminal Courts Complex, Parkgate Street in Dublin.
Mr Justice Paul Butler, presiding, sitting with Judge William Hamill and Judge Alison Lindsay said today’s hearing would be the “true and final” sitting of the Special Criminal Court at Dublin’s Green Street.
