Gardaí investigate Dublin hostage-taking and theft

Gardaí are investigating the abduction of members of a cash-in-transit worker's family in Dublin.

A gang of armed men held the Brinks Allied employee's mother and niece hostage and ordered him to remove cash from a delivery van on O'Connell Street.

It is believed around €100,000 was stolen during the incident before the two women were released unharmed.

The gang of armed men entered the man's house off Bath Avenue in Irishtown at around 6.30am today. The Brinks Allied worker lived there with members of his family.

The man's mother and niece were abducted from the house. He was forced to travel to Bank of Ireland on O'Connell Street at around 11.30am to obtain money from a cash-in-transit van as it made a delivery.

He took the money - believed to be €100,000 - to a location in Drumcondra in a white Renault van.

The man's mother and niece were released unharmed in Shankill in South Dublin at 12.30pm.

Gardaí say the security company employee went into Bray garda station at 2pm.

Gardaí - who say all the protocols in place were followed - are appealing for any witnesses to contact them.
