Carey: Tiger gang are 'scum of the earth'

Former hurler DJ Carey has described as "scum of the earth" the gang behind yesterday's 'tiger' kidnapping in Kilkenny.

Former Kilkenny hurler Adrian Ronan, his wife Mary and the couple's three young children were confronted by three armed men in their Kilkenny home. Mr Ronan was later ordered to take money from the Bank of Ireland branch in the city where he worked.

The family were later released unharmed and the three-man armed gang left empty-handed.

Mr Carey, a friend of the family, said the perpetrators need to be caught and brought to justice.

"These people are walking the streets and they're scum of the earth" he said.

"They're probably well know to gardaí; Gardaí can do nothing because the system doesn't allow them to do an awful lot".

"We need to lock them up and put them away and make our society a little bit more secure" he added.
