Five major agencies representing people with intellectual disabilities are launching a campaign today against any cuts that might be made to their services in December's Budget.

The groups say supporting children with intellectual disabilities will actually save the State money in the long term by helping them integrate better into society.

Meanwhile, Active Retirement Ireland is also warning that any more cuts to services for older people will damage the country in the long run.

It says the rural transport initiative in particular is an important service that helps older people play an active role in society and the economy.

The Government has repeatedly said that no area of spending is off the table as it considers how to make €4bn worth of cuts in the Budget for next year.
