McAleese adds voice to Kennedy tributes
President Mary McAleese has today paid tribute to US Senator Edward Kennedy, who died last night after battling a brain tumour.
Mrs McAleese says the 77-year-old will be remembered by the people of Ireland as a hugely important friend to the country.
Elsewhere, the North's Deputy First Minister, Martin McGuinness, says the Massachusetts Senator's influence was critical in pushing forward the peace process.
US President Barack Obama says he and his wife Michelle were heartbroken to hear the news of Mr Kennedy's death, describing him as the greatest US Senator of modern times.
Earlier today, the Taoiseach, Brian Cowen, said Mr Kennedy was one of the most distinguished and talented figures in American politics.
