Inmates charged over Mountjoy riot

Twenty-seven former and serving inmates at Ireland’s largest prison have been charged with rioting.

The prisoners at Mountjoy jail, Dublin, barricaded themselves in to a basement recreation centre on July 12 last year, broke into adjacent workshops and caused over €100,000 worth of damage.

A total of five prison officers and two prisoners were taken to hospital during the stand-off.

A Garda spokesman said: “There is a total of 27 people who will be brought before the courts from Tuesday onwards in relation to the riot last year.”

A total of 19 of those to be charged are still in custody.

They are due to be taken from prison in groups and brought before the courts over the next two weeks.
