Sisters of Charity to apologise for institutional abuse

The Sisters of Charity are set to formally apologise today to the victims of child abuse in religious-run State institutions.

The religious order was involved in running some of the institutions covered by the recent Ryan Report into the widespread abuse of children over the course of several decades.

The Sisters of Charity have been accused of hiding behind CORI spokespeople since the publication of the report.

However, the well-known social campaigner Sr Stanislaus Kennedy will issue a formal apology on behalf of the order at a conference in Dublin today.

John Kelly from the Survivors of Child Abuse says apologies from the religious orders are meaningless unless they show a genuine willingness to provide more compensation to abuse victims.
