Teenager charged in connection with hit-and-run remanded

A teenager charged with dangerous driving in connection with a suspected hit-and-run incident in Dublin last month was remanded on continuing bail at the Children’s Court today.

A 23-year-old man from the Bluebell area, in south Dublin, was in a critical condition at St James’s Hospital after he was knocked down at around midday on Sunday, April 19 last.

The teenage boy (aged 17), who cannot be identified because he is a juvenile, had been charged on the following day at the Children’s Court with dangerous driving in a manner including speed, at Huband Road, in Bluebell.

The stocky, dark-haired teenager, who is from the Dublin city’s south-side, was then remanded on conditional bail.

Today, Garda David Gilmore of Kilmainham station told Judge Clare Leonard that he was seeking further time for directions from the DPP to be obtained.

“An extensive and substantial file has gone to the DPP in relation to this matter,” he said.

He also informed the court that directions are being sought as to whether further charges are to be brought against the boy, who was accompanied to court by his father.

Judge Leonard told defence counsel Ms Elizabeth Davey that she was going to put the case back until a date in September.

She agreed to mark the case peremptory against the State meaning it would be struck out on that date if the DPP’s directions were not available then.

The judge also agreed to a request from the defence to amend the teenager’s bail conditions in relation to the address he is to reside at and the Garda station at which he is to sign on daily.

Garda Gilmore said he had no objection.

Last month two other bail conditions had been set down on the teenager who was ordered to stay away from the Bluebell area and not to have any contact “directly or indirectly” with witnesses of the alleged incident.

The court had also heard that boy would reside out his home area, “which would address the problem in relation to safety.”
