Energy-saving scheme for schools announced

Schools will be warmer and cheaper to heat under a new €20m energy-saving scheme, it was announced today.

Education Minister Batt O’Keeffe said he was making grants available to improve roof and cavity wall insulation levels in school buildings across the State.

“Schools can now apply to the Department of Education for 100% grant-aid to carry out energy-efficient works over the quiet summer months,” he said.

The new energy efficiency scheme is separate to the Summer Works Scheme announced last week, the Minister said.

It is being run with the help of Sustainable Energy Ireland and will allow schools to apply for funding on a once-off basis.

“These measures will make buildings more comfortable, cut energy costs and contribute to the Government’s national targets of reducing carbon dioxide emissions,” said Mr O’Keeffe.

“The scheme is significant when you consider that about 73% of a school’s energy consumption is on heating and hot water, with the remainder on lighting and other small-power appliances.

“The work, which won’t require a consultant, will be specific and straightforward and should be completed over a few days.”

The scheme will target older school buildings which are less energy-efficient.
