Belfast traffic wardens sacked after 'unlawful strike'

Twenty-six NCP traffic wardens who staged an unofficial strike in Belfast earlier this month have been dismissed, it was announced today.

The workers were protesting about conditions including sickness pay and rota changes.

NCP said the staff took action without “proper process”.

Spokesman Tim Cowen said: “We were very reluctant to take this decision but we have a moral and contractual obligation to deliver a public service for the people of Belfast and we cannot allow that to be disrupted by unlawful strike action.”

The company sacked 26 workers out of a total on street patrol across the North of 180.

Their shifts are being covered by other traffic attendants who have not supported the unlawful action.
