RSA launches driver fatigue campaign

Gardaí are gearing up for a bank holiday blitz this weekend.

The Road Safety Authority is clamping down on driver fatigue, saying it could be a factor in one in five road deaths here.

Some 10% of drivers admit to having fallen asleep at the wheel, and over half have opened windows to try and fight tiredness.

Motorists are being offered a free coffee at Topaz filling stations around the country tomorrow.

Separately, road users were today urged to exercise caution and demonstrate responsible behaviour this Easter holiday.

“Last year, two people were killed and six were seriously injured on our roads over Easter," said TD Noel Ahern, Minister of State at the Department of Transport

"Every bank holiday weekend brings risks, particularly when travelling long distances or travelling without breaks. But even one death is one too many. I am appealing today to all road users to take care on our roads this weekend.”

Earlier this week, gardaí announced that significant resources will be deployed across the country over Easter to improve road safety. In particular, they will target the non-wearing of seatbelts, reckless driving and drink and drug driving.
