Teen further remanded on bail in relation to St Patrick's Day riots
A teenager charged with violent disorder during riots which broke out in Finglas in Dublin on St Patrick’s Day was further remanded on bail by the Children’s Court today.
Mr John Paul Maguire (aged 18), of Dunsink Green, in Finglas is one of a number of youths who have been charged with violent disorder in connection with the incidents. He had been aged 17, a juvenile, at the time of his arrest, but has since turned 18 and is now an adult.
The DPP has recommended that his and five co-defendants, who appeared in the court last week, could have their cases retained in the Children’s Court subject to a guilty plea.
Otherwise their cases are to be sent forward to the Circuit Court which can, on conviction, impose lengthier sentences.
Judge Bryan Smyth remanded Mr Maguire, to allow him time to consider his plea, until December 19 next when his co-defendants are also to appear in court.
Last Friday, Garda Patricia Doyle had given evidence in relation to the co-defendants facing violent disorder charges stating that sixty people are alleged to have attacked gardaí with rocks, missiles and a petrol bomb during riots.
Garda Doyle had said it was alleged that “Sixty people attacked a Finglas patrol van.
“A number of bottles and stones were thrown and a petrol bomb. Although no one was observed throwing particular missiles the accused was identified,” she had said in relation to the co-defendants.
The court had also heard that there had been a massive public order incident during which 60 to 80 were involved, with cars being hi-jacked and burned out.
Three juveniles, aged 16, are among the co-defendants facing violent disorder charges.
