Youth remanded in custody after visiting alleged victim's workplace

A youth accused of attacking a shop worker has been remanded in custody after he repeatedly went to his alleged victim’s workplace.

The teenager has been charged at the Children’s Court with assaulting the man, at the Londis shop car park, at Blackhorse Avenue, in Cabra, Dublin on July 25 last.

Judge Bryan Smyth heard that the teen, who is now aged 18 but was 17 years old at the time of the alleged offence, had been given bail on October 24 last with a number of strict conditions.

He had been ordered not to have any contact with the complainant and had been ordered to stay away from the area where the shop is located.

However, Judge Smyth was told today that there was an application for bail to be revoked.

Evidence was given by three gardaí detailing incidents where the teenager had been seen at the shop, beginning the day after he was given conditional bail.

Garda Paul Doonagh also told Judge Smyth that on November 9 last he went to the shop after a call was received from its manager saying there were a number of youths there “smoking a joint”.

He said the teenager tried to a hide in a cupboard in the shop and a quantity of suspected cannabis was seized from him. The court was also told the teenager had been repeatedly spotted in the area and in the company of other youths he has been barred from associating with by the court.

Defence counsel Mr Emmet Nolan pleaded for bail to be granted. He said the teenager had to go to the shop to get water for a local football team. The defendant, who is taking part in a training course, has also had to reside in the area, with a relative, due to building work at his family home.

Judge Smyth revoked bail and remanded the teenager in custody for one week to St Patrick’s Institution.
