Galway City Councillors vote to provide water filters after lead contamination

Galway City Councillors have voted to provide water filters to all houses affected by the lead contamination crisis.

Filters will be given to some 251 houses in Old Mervue and other affected areas in the city.

The council says it could take up to five years to replace the pipes.

At a meeting last night, the city manager Joe McGrath said he would not be able to provide the filters until he consults with the Environmental Protection Agency - he will return with a consultants report later this month.
