Donegal woman denies being helped in changing year of alleged abuse

A Donegal woman has denied at the Central Criminal Court that she was helped by gardaí or anyone else in changing the year she claims her uncle-in-law last sexually abused her.

The 27-year-old woman told defence counsel, Mr John O'Kelly SC (with Mr Kerida Naidoo BL), in cross-examination that her recollection of the actual date was correct but said she initially gave the wrong year.

She said she was able to place the date by a certain family event but she had the wrong year at first.

"I have now figured it all out by myself without help from anyone. All my story in my statement is right except for the year I gave at first," she said.

"My memories of my own childhood are vivid," she added.

A 50-year-old man has pleaded not guilty to 11 charges of rape and 22 charges of sexual assault on dates between April 1, 1993 and June 15, 1996 when she was aged between 11 and 15 years old.

The trial continues before Ms Justice Elizabeth Dunne and a jury of seven women and five men.
