Consumer confidence in Ireland has increased for a second consecutive month despite the turmoil on the international markets.

However, the latest consumer sentiment index from the ESRI and IIB Bank was compiled before the latest meltdown on the stock markets and the rejection of the $700bn (€487bn) US bail-out plan.

The main reason for the improvement in confidence was the perception of a better outlook for household finances.
