Education Minister Batt O'Keefe says schools should consult the school community when drawing up policies on uniforms.

Education Minister Batt O'Keefe says schools should consult the school community when drawing up policies on uniforms.

The recommendation is one of a number published by the minister today in response to queries about the wearing of the hijab and other religious attire by certain pupils.

He says schools should consult the school community when drawing up uniform policy and be mindful of their legal obligation to promote respect for diversity of values, beliefs and traditions.

Mr O'Keefe says uniforms policy should not exclude people of particular religions, but he also says the wearing of certain clothing that obscures the face can hinder proper communication.
