USI slams talk of reintroducing third-level fees

The Union of Students in Ireland has hit out at the Department of Education's decision to examine the possible return of third-level fees.

Reports this morning say Education Minister Batt O'Keefe has signalled the move despite the Government's previous promises that fees would not be reintroduced.

Any new charges will reportedly target families with incomes well above the national average.

However, the USI claims the introduction of fees would have a negative impact on college participation rates, as well as grades, because students would have to work to meet the cost of their education.
