Polish man dies after stab attack
A murder inquiry was launched tonight after one of two Polish men injured in a vicious knife attack died.
A 19-year-old man was being questioned in connection with the stabbing which left the second man fighting for his life.
The two friends, both in their 20s, were stabbed in the head in a row in the Drimnagh area of south Dublin on Saturday night.
It is understood one of the men slipped into a coma tonight and died a short while later. The second remained in a critical condition in St James’s Hospital.
Gardaí said a 19-year-old man was arrested and was being held under section four of the Criminal Justice Act at Sundrive Road garda station.
Superintendent Bart Faulkner said the investigation was continuing and appealed for witnesses.
“This is a terrible crime which has been committed not just against new members of our community but against the community itself,” he said.
“The good people of Drimnagh are appalled at what has happened in their neighbourhood. We are asking people to come forward with information and to work with us in achieving justice for these young men and their families.”
The two men were taken to Dublin’s St James’ for treatment. It is understood they were attacked by three men and suffered severe stab wounds to the head.
