Gardaí hold two after €7m heroin seizure
Drugs squad officers smashed a massive drug smuggling ring today and seized a multi-million-euro haul of heroin.
A man and woman were arrested after the drugs worth around €7m were recovered when gardaí stopped a van in Palmerstown in the west of Dublin yesterday evening.
The 35-year-old man who had been driving the van fled on foot when he spotted gardaí, but was arrested a short time later.
Officers then mounted a number of intelligence-led raids at various locations across the capital, seizing cars and raiding homes.
Gardaí were supported by officers from the National Drugs Unit, Air Support, Technical Bureau, Ballyfermot and Clondalkin stations and other specialist units.
In one of the many follow-up searches across the city, a 35-year-old woman was also arrested.
Both were being questioned at Clondalkin garda station under the provisions of section two of the Criminal Justice Drug Trafficking Act.
A number of vehicles seized in the raids were taken in for forensic examination.
