Former TD Kit Ahern dies

The first woman to serve as a TD for North Kerry has passed away today.

A former TD, senator and county councillor, Kit Ahern died this morning in Tralee.

The Ballybunion native would have turned 93 years old next month.

She served one term as TD following her election to Dáil Éireann in 1977 for Fianna Fáil before losing her seat and retiring from national politics.

Despite her retirement, she did defect to the Progressive Democrats in 1985.

Ms Ahern also served as president of the Irish Country Women's Association.
