Boy, 17, robbed petrol station with screwdriver

A youth who made off with €530 when he took part in a raid of a petrol station armed with a screwdriver, has been given a six month sentence by Judge Ann Ryan at the Dublin Children’s Court.

The 17-year-old boy had pleaded guilty to robbery, at the Centenary service station, on the N11, in Cabinteely, on April 8 last.

Garda Sylvia Ryan of Dun Laoghaire station had said it was alleged that “at 6 am we received a panic alarm at the service station on the N11. Staff said they had been robbed, one had a hammer and the other had a screwdriver.

They threatened the staff member with the hammer and made off with the cash.

The south Dublin boy, who also admitted a drink driving and motor theft charge, had spent time in care and had previously been homeless. He is now living with his family again and had found a job.

Judge Ryan noted that the boy had no previous convictions, had pleaded guilty to the offences and appeared to be staying out of trouble.

She imposed a six-month sentence but suspended it on condition he was of good behaviour for the next 12 months. The boy was also given a four-year road ban for the drink driving charge.
