An elderly man was killed in a hit and run after attending Mass, it emerged today.

The 89-year-old man died after he was struck by a car in Ogonnolloe village near Killaloe in Co Clare at 8.30pm last night.

Gardai believe the vehicle involved is a dark saloon and is likely to have sustained damaged to its windscreen and registration plate.

The victim had just attended Mass and was struck by the car as he walked home.

Garda Superintendent Tony Kenneally appealed for witnesses and for any information that may lead to identifying the car involved.

“This car is described as dark in colour and it is very likely that it sustained damage to the front of the vehicle, in particular the windscreen and the number plate,” he said.
