Justice Minister appoints Garda Commissioner

The Justice Minister has appointed Deputy Commissioner Fachtna Murphy to succeed Noel Conroy as Garda Commissioner, when he retires in November.

Mr Murphy, a Cork native, has been a member of the Gardaí since 1967.

In 1999 he was promoted to Assistant Commissioner and then in 2003 he was appointed Deputy Commisioner, with responsibility for operational policing.

He has spearheaded a number of high-profile operations including Operation Anvil, which targets gangland murders and gun crime.

A married father-of-four, Mr Murphy holds a Batchelor of Arts Degree in Police Management and a Diploma in Management and Industrial Relations. He has also studied policing methods overseas at both the Police Training College, Bramshill and at the F.B.I. Academy, Quantico.
