President sends message to people of Peru

President McAleese has sent a message of condolence to the Peruvian president in recognition of the loss of life and destruction caused by Wednesday's earthquake.

She said the thoughts and prayers of the Irish are with the people of Peru during this difficult time.

More than 500 people have died and at least 1,500 are injured following the earthquake.

The Peruvian President, Alan Garcia Perez has called for calm, following reports of looting.
