Irish teenager dies after Lanzarote assault

Police are investigating the death of an Irish teenager who was attacked with an iron bar in the Canary Islands.

It is believed a traffic accident in the popular resort town of Puerto del Carmen in Lanzarote led to a row at about 5.30am.

The holidaymaker, who was in his late teens, is believed to have been attacked with an iron bar by up to two other people.

The Department of Foreign Affairs said it is liaising with the victim’s family.

“The Department is aware of the death of an Irish citizen in the Canary Islands,” a spokeswoman said.

“Officials are in contact with the Irish Embassy in Madrid and the Honorary Consul in Lanzarote and are offering consular assistance to the victim’s family.”

Police are believed to be looking for two men in relation to the incident.

Meanwhile, Irish people have been warned to stay away from massive forest fires raging on the Lanzarote and Gran Canaria islands.

A Department of Foreign Affairs travel advisory said: “Some fires are still burning out of control. The main holiday resorts and airports on both islands are unaffected. There are no reports of any Irish casualties.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs does not advise against travel to the affected islands but Irish citizens should remain vigilant, should not travel to or near the affected areas and should heed the advice of the authorities and their travel companies while on the islands.”

The Department urged people to call the Spanish Emergency Services if they have concerns about the location of the fires.
