The Progressive Democrats have reportedly confirmed Mary Harney's position as interim leader following a challenge from Senator Tom Morrissey.

Mr Morrissey had claimed her role as acting leader, which she accepted following the resignation of Michael McDowell, had no authority and was unconstitutional.

However, reports this morning say the PDs' unanimously backed her leadership role at a meeting of the parliamentary party yesterday.

The Minister for Health will now remain in the job until a new leader is chosen later this year.
