An unexploded pipe bomb thrown from a passing car in west Dublin was removed for safe detonation, a Defence Forces spokesman confirmed today.

The Bomb Disposal Unit was called in after the device landed on the ground in the middle of Lady’s Well Road, Mulhuddart, in the north-west of the city.

Gardaí immediately sealed off the area and nearby apartments were evacuated as a precaution.

Traffic was also diverted from the scene.

It is understood the bomb was thrown at a group of people, but narrowly missed them and landed unexploded on the ground.
