Socialist Higgins is first party leader to lose seat

Socialist Party leader Joe Higgins is the first high profile candidate to lose out in this year's election.

He lost out to Labour's Joan Burton for the final seat in Dublin West.

Meanwhile, Fianna Fáil is continuing to make gains around the country and could come close to achieving an overall majority.

However its doom and gloom for the PDs.

Among those in trouble are Liz O'Donnell, Fiona O'Malley and Tim O'Malley. Mae Sexton in Lonford/Westmeath will not be returning to the next Dáil.

PD Party Leader Michael McDowell could also find himself out of a job as he is currently in a fight to retain his seat in Dublin South East with John Gormley of the Greens.

In Mayo, the Fine Gael Leader Enda Kenny has topped the Poll and said the public have spoken.

The count is over in Dublin South West with Fianna Fáil's Charlie O'Connor taking the fourth and final seat.

Conor Lenihan of FF, and alternative coalition hopefuls Pat Rabbitte and FG's Brian Hayes complete the line-up there.

FF's Johnny Brady has now also been elected in Meath West along with Noel Dempsey.
