Anti-Shell campaigner wins European environment prize

Anti-Shell campaigner Willie Corduff has won the prestigious European Goldman environmental prize.

Anti-Shell campaigner Willie Corduff has won the prestigious European Goldman environmental prize.

The Mayo farmer was one of five people jailed in 2005 for protesting at plans to build the Shell gas pipeline near their land.

The Rossport Five succeeded in getting the pipeline re-routed; their campaign against the Shell refinery in Bellinaboy continues.

One of the group, Michial O'Seighin, expressed his delight earlier today.

"We're absolutely delighted - we're over the moon about it. Anything of this nature is further vindication of our stance. We were never about stopping anything - it was about clean air and clean water," he said.
