Inspectors to protect worker's rights

Up to 90 labour inspectors are to protect the rights of workers all over the country, it was announced today.

Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Micheál Martin said the opening of regional offices for the inspectors was an important move to ensure that workers in every county have their rights protected.

“At present we are in the process of increasing the number of inspectors by 200% to 90, as set out in Towards 2016,” he said.

“The locations and the number of inspectors and support staff assigned will be based on the basis of population, workforce and gateways identified in the National Spatial Strategy.”

The inspectors will be based in Dublin, Cork, Shannon, Sligo, and the new head office for the Employment Rights Authority in Carlow which will be headed by former Taxi Regulator Ger Deering.
