The DUP leader, Ian Paisley, says the time for Sinn Féin to act on policing is now and, provided his party was convinced, there would be a level playing field.

Gerry Adams, the Sinn Féin president, says his understanding of what London is proposing, concurs with the proposal he intends putting to his party's special ard fheis on policing.

The British prime minister, Tony Blair, meanwhile, has confirmed Sinn Fein's view that control over policing in the North should be transferred to Belfast by May 2008.
