Young inmate found dead in Portlaoise prison cell

Gardaí and prison officials are investigating the overnight death of an inmate at the Midlands Prison in Portlaoise.

The man, who is believed to have been in his late 20s, was found dead in his single cell by an officer doing his rounds at around 1.30am.

He was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.

The cause of his death is still unclear.
