Children’s rights referendum to take place in March

Children’s rights groups have welcomed the prospective referendum on the rights of children and young people that is expected to take place next March.

Last night, the Taoiseach expressed his desire to have a constitutional referendum at the City West Hotel on the eve of the party’s Ard Fheis.

One in Four, which supports those who've experienced sexual violence, welcomed the Taoiseach's determination to afford our children the highest level of protection

Spokesman Colm O’Gorman described the development as a moment of unique importance for all those who care about the rights of children.

He said the referendum comes is part of an increasing recognition of individual rights.

Mr O’Gorman cited the impending privacy legislation, which would ensure the right to one’s good name, as an example of this.

“The rights accorded to families, much more so than children, have caused situations that where there has been a competition between children in matters related to their own welfare and the rights of others, the rights of children have come out second best really," he said.
