Clonsilla pipebomb defused

A pipebomb was defused in a car outside a house in Dublin’s Clonsilla today.

The army bomb disposal team was called to the house at Ravenswood Heights in Clonsilla, Dublin, after the device was thrown into a vehicle.

A Defence Force spokesman said the Army EOD team defused the device within an hour after they were called to the scene by gardai at 1.45pm.

The spokesman said: “It was put through the window of a car. It was attempted to be initiated and failed but it was a viable device.

“The army team are working to give the maximum forensic evidence possible from the device to gardaí. There were a number of types of propellant used in it and they are working to pin-point them."

The Defence Forces said they evacuated houses in the surrounding area and it was cordoned off as the officers worked to safely defuse it.

“It certainly wasn’t a hoax,” the spokesman said. “The pipe was 22 inches long. It would have done a fair bit of damage if it had went off.”
