Man and woman killed in Longford, Westmeath road crashes

A man and an elderly woman have died in separate road accidents in Co Longford and Co Westmeath.

The man died when his car collided with a lorry near the Kilbeggan racecourse in Co Westmeath at around 5.30am today.

The woman, meanwhile, died after being struck by a car on Main Street in Granard, Co Longford, yesterday evening.

The 84-year-old was seriously injured in the accident at just before 6pm and died at Mullingar Hospital a number of hours later.

The two fatalities bring to 308 the number of people killed on Ireland's roads so far this year.
