New figures show that Ireland has lost its place as being one of Europe’s most generous nation's where organ donations are concerned.

In Europe for the number of organ donations. Ireland had 137 kidney transplant operations in 1990, compared with 127 last year, even though there are eight times more people on dialysis than 16 years ago.

A record 57 liver transplant operations were carried out in Saint Vincent's Hospital in Dublin last year making the quest for organ donors even more urgent.

As part of the promotion for European Day for Organ, campaigners have urged the public to carry an organ donor card.
