The number of malaria cases in Ireland so far this year is up more than 125% on the same period last year, according to new figures from the Tropical Medical Bureau.

The bureau says 76 people have been treated for the disease since January.

It also says a new survey has found that Irish people travelling to malaria-prone countries are more worried about the risk of a terrorist attack than the potentially fatal infection.

Doctors are warning people to know the health risks before travelling to tropical areas.
