The Department of Foreign Affairs is advising Irish citizens to exercise extra caution in Thailand due to last night's military coup in the country.

The Thai Prime Minister, Thaksin Shinawatra, was removed from power by military leaders while he was attending the UN General Assembly in New York.

The overthrow was swift and bloodless and was met with no resistance.

The situation in Thailand is said to be calm today, but the Irish Government is advising Irish people in the country to continue to monitor the situation through media outlets.
