Nationalists seek review of Portadown parade decision

Nationalists in Portadown have asked the Parades Commission to review its decision not to impose any restrictions on an Orange Order march in the Co Armagh town this weekend.

The loyalist organisation is planning to hold a parade on Saturday to mark the 3,000th day since the annual Drumcree march was prevented from entering the nationalist Garvaghy Road area.

The Parades Commission has ruled that this weekend's event is non-contentious and should face no restrictions on its route.

However, nationalist residents, the local Catholic clergy, the SDLP and Sinn Féin have all asked the body to reconsider the ruling.

They say there is huge potential for trouble as there is nothing to restrict the parade from continuing right up to a Catholic estate of 500 homes.
